WHO WAS THAT MASKED MAN

Columbia Pictures has picked up feature rights to "The Lone Ranger" for Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, producing through their studio-based Red Wagon Entertainment.

A screenwriter will chronicle the adventures of a masked man known as the Lone Ranger, his horse Silver and trusty companion Tonto. "Ranger" rights holders Classic Media, run by Eric Ellenbogen and Bob Higgins, will executive produce.

"This is a project we are very excited to secure," Wick said. "Its origin story combines all the elements of a classic Western -- the Texas Rangers, the Indians and one man's tale of friendship and revenge. The characters of Tonto and the Lone Ranger have been beloved for decades. This project is a top priority."

'The Lone Ranger' began in 1930's-40's radio, becoming a hit TV series in the 1950's. The series was brought to the big screen in 1981's "The Legend of the Lone Ranger," directed by William A. Fraker.
